A lot of shoe changing...

Japan is a pretty traditional place in some respects, and you have to do a lot of shoe changing around here. We have to take off our shoes when we enter certain places, put on slippers, then take the slippers off when you walk on tatami mats, but you're never supposed to be barefoot. So, we end up spending a lot of time in our socks.

At all the temples, you have to take your shoes off to walk around. It is weird to be walking around in your socks in public. Here I am, contemplating a moss garden.

Of course, the down side is that guys like Jeremy (above) can't fit into any of the slippers they give us at some of the places to shuffle around in. He tries, but they're little sizes.
